My Adventure Edition 2.0 has been serving me well for over 3 years now. Recently I noticed that circles are not quite round. I saw slight corners on them that suggested that there was backlash in the Y axis. This appears as a "corner" on the circle at the point where the Y axis reverses direction a bit late. I measured the backlash with a dial indicator and found it was over 0.012"by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
OK, for those of you who have their machine set to mm by default: I empirically set the max jerk for X, Y to 2000 mm/min^3 and Z to 4000 mm/min^3. This seems to produce pretty fast motion carving terrain. Since the Z axis never travels very far it does not accelerate to as high a speed and therefore can tolerate higher jerk than X & Y without missing steps. I have not tested this inby stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Thanks, Brian! That video is exciting because it suggests that I may not have to carve for 3 hours to do a decent 150x200mm terrain carving. Thanks for explaining about the s-curves and jerk settings. I am glad it was not data starving (bumping up against the limits of the microprocessor speed) I will make the adjustments you suggested for my next carving! -Steveby stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Feed was set to 2000mm/min (33mm/sec, 1.3"/sec), plunge to 1000mm/min (16mm/sec 0.7"/sec). Those should be really fast. But it oozes along at about 5mm/sec when it is doing a lot of X,Y and Z at the same time.by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
I am carving complex 3D terrain. I am using F360's 3D Parallel toolpath, and find that no matter what feed rate I set, it slows way down whenever it has to do a lot of Z movement. Is there some setting I can use to speed things up? I get a lot of burning because the cutter is traveling through the wood too slowly at times. I have turned the RPM all they way down to 1 to reduce this problem.by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Thanks, Ryan, for your instructions on using a Mac to do re-flashing of the Edison, and thanks, Mark, for telling us about Etcher. I will use those tools next time I need to flash something. Being completely stuck for over a week (I asked here if there was a Mac flasher on Mar 23), I got a refurbished PC laptop with Win10pro and this re-flashed correctly on the first go, with no errors. Hi Ryan, For the above attempts, I was using my shortest, shielded USB cable (19"). I just tried another one, about the same length, and got the attached error message. If it is possible to reflash using my Mac OS, please tell me how, because I think my problems are due to delays with the Virtual PC getting the USB connection to Edison working. Thanks, Steveby stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Thanks, Brian, that will be great to get some help. Until then, my beloved Handibot is just an expensive doorstop!by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Here's a couple more error messages upon retrying the Flash.bat. I got a little bit further, but I don't know what "Invalid DFU suffix signature" is or how to fix that. Advice?by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
More progress: I copied the Fabmo zip folder to the root level of C:\\ and tried to invoke Flash.bat there. Yay! It ran....for a second. Then I plugged in the Edison and it exits with an Exit Code 74 (See attached screenshot). I have no idea what that means. Any advice?by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
OK, I am making progress but need help. I got the VMware emulation of Windows 7 talking to the Edison card via the USB, after installing the driver as advised in the instructions. But when I run the Flash.bat I get a "UNC paths not supported" error. (SEE ATTACHED SCREENSHOT) I assume that means I have to move some files somewhere or set default paths? Please provide detailed instruby stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Thanks for the quick reply, Brian.I am assuming you don't have a flasher for MacOS X? I will attempt with Vmware Fusion, because I do not have access to any PCs (We are a Mac-only household) If you or anyone has any particular advice on how to deal with COM ports or USB settings in VMware, please let me know. On Mac OS, this stuff is all automatic.by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
After a failed update, my Handibot is now completely unusable. Fabmo only shows one screen (see attached) and none of the links work. How can I get Fabmo and the Hadibot back to a usable state? I tried power cycling several times; nothing changed. I will attach also the log text of the failed update... Thanks, Steveby stevempotter - Handibot Forum
I tried to update my Fabmo (from 1.2.2) and I think it updated to a bad version and it got stuck. I now can't get to the configuration parts of the interface because I don't see a version number at upper right to click on. (See attached screen capture) I have attached the text from the updating process, which I hope you can interpret and advise me on how to finish the update withoutby stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Thanks, Brian, that is very helpful. Now, is there such an adjustment I can make for a non-level travel in the Y direction?by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Thanks, Wazza. That is sort of what I did, which is to carve a 6x8" pocket into my spoil board table and put a piece of acrylic into that. But to cut multiple pieces or a bigger work that requires indexing of tiles, I can't figure out a way to keep it all co-planar and leveled.by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
I am trying to carve and engrave 3D shapes and lettering on thin acrylic sheets. For applications like this, or cutting traces on copper clad PCB material, getting the machine to be level with the surface of the material is crucial. I am finding up to 0.5mm variation across the 6x8" cutting area. Do any of you have tricks for ensuring that when you set Z to the top of the material in one plby stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Hi Ted, I carved a mm ruler with my Handibot into 6x8" acrylic sheet. It looks great. I carved one in the vertical direction with lines every mm, and one in the horizontal direction. For the Y, it is bang on the whole 8" or 210mm. But for the X, it is off (compared to several metal rules I have) by about 0.5mm by the time it gets to 140mm from the origin. ~0.4% error. If you want to use your Handibot on big 4x8 sheets of plywood, it is nice to have a flat sturdy workbench big enough to support them. I built one and describe how to build it on Instructables. See the details here, including a time-lapse of the build process: http://www.instructables.com/id/Very-STURDY-and-Flat-4x8-Workbench-Table/by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Thanks for posting the 6 Handibot videos on YouTube, Brian! Those are very helpful and inspiring. Please post more, and include some more elementary ones for CNC newbies. Just get any bystander with a smartphone to video you doing your thing...Does not have to be highly produced and edited. My current request: V-bit carving of large designs requiring tiling! Thanks, Steveby stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Thanks, RS, those are excellent suggestions: 1. Clean off all dust and chips each tile. 2. Make sure Handibot is well seated against indexing jig. 3. Clamp everything down well (including the Handibot?) I also thought of trying smaller tiles with some overlap, so I am eager to hear how it goes for you. Keep us informed! Wlll anyone else chime in with their tiling experiences? -Steveby stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Here is a link to my attached photo, which did not download for me from the above post. Tiling glitches: -Steve PS--How to upload attachments so they work properly?by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
I would like to be able to engrave signs with the Handibot. I have the indexing jig and have tried to use it to engrave letters that span tiles created in VcarvePro. This sort of works, but not very well. I set VcarvePro to 6"x8" tiles, no overlap. Is that correct for a 90 degree 0.5" diam V-bit (that the Handibot came with)? The one video I could find about Tiling for the Handiboby stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Bumping the message back up: Does anyone have advice on tiling a large engraving toolpath in Fusion 360?by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
I see in the screencast David Preiss posted (that Mike linked above) that he used a 2D Contour operation, which has the Geometry tab option to use a sketched face as "stock contours" to limit how far the tool cuts (see attached screenshot). But this option is not available in the 2D Engrave operation (see attached screenshot), and a 2D Contour would only trace the outline of the textby stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Thanks, Mike. I can see from the video that he was able to simulate cutting along a tiled set of toolpaths...But how were they set up? How to tell the router not to go past the end of the stock?by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Has anyone tried to do tiling (with or without the indexing jig) in Fusion 360 CAM? I do not see any provision for it like there is in Vcarve Pro. If you have, or know of resources that describe it, please point us to those! Thanks, Steveby stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Thanks, Ryan, those updates seem to have fixed the problem of it getting stuck when using the green move macro buttons. Back to my original question, if it were to get stuck again, is there any way to unstick it without power cycling, which might ruin a multi-part job?by stevempotter - Handibot Forum
Thanks, Vegasracer. That inventables post worked great for getting Brian's post-processor into my Mac version of Fusion 360. -Steveby stevempotter - Handibot Forum
