Excellent advice above. If your problem is not with the Z axis prox having already been triggered, then look at the switches. You can test any of them by depressing the tiny little black button (it's a "V" shape like a very small shark's tooth). You should see the indicator (it's on the red panel of the software) for Input #3 going on and off. As noted above, all proxby Ted Hall, ShopBot - Handibot Forum
Just a quick suggestion on 'air-cutting' ... If, after getting your tool positioned, zeroed, and ready for the cut, you move to say a Z of 1.0 and turn the router off ... then cut the file using the 3D offset function (found in the file set-up dialog), your starting location will be treated as 0,0,0 and the tool will move over the material exactly 1" above your true cut (*of coursby Ted Hall, ShopBot - Handibot Forum
Hi Shawn, A good question. And, there is strong interest from at least one member of the development team in going that route. In the short run, because, even if we did just use the BBB and its PRUs, we would still need a little extra hardware to serve as the interface to the rest of the CNC system (think of it as a sort of shield), or building a custom BBB. So it does not give us the nextby Ted Hall, ShopBot - Handibot App Developers Forum
Hi Daniel, Sorry I didn't notice this earlier. And, perhaps you have already called ShopBot and gotten an answer ... It is possible there is an electrical issue with the motor or electronics, but I suspect that what has happened is that the two location tracking systems for the Handibot have gotten out of sync (current location coordinates vs Table Base Coordinates). Sorry to be responding to this thread belatedly ... but there is some good info here about what we need to be communicating in the start-up guide. We'll work to get it incorporated into an upcoming version. Thanks, Ted Hall, ShopBotby Ted Hall, ShopBot - Handibot Forum
Hello All, As we've been working on the next physical version of Handibot we've been planning on a holder for the collet wrench and have some pretty good ideas ... but some sort of holder for cutters would be great too. Hi Wally, I'm sure there will be other opinions on this ... but I'll just jump in with a few thoughts. Despite a similarity in mechanical elements and motors, the Desktop and Handibot are very different tools. The Desktop is a traditional CNC tool, oriented for benchtop use. We think of as a mature product. It has a very rigid frame and deck and is designed for serious machininby Ted Hall, ShopBot - Handibot Forum
Hi Mark, Yes ... both of those are on our list. More broadly, David is about to put up a new blog area called "Handibot Labs" where we will post as many of the things we are puttering with that we can get up ... along with our ideas about what should specifically go into a next vesion (apart from the new FabMo Platform for the motion stuff). I think we'll treat the blog postiby Ted Hall, ShopBot - Handibot App Developers Forum
Hi Mark, Yes ... absolutely. In OpenSBP code, that number is called the "Unit Value" and is set with the Command. For a Handibot it is 4000, meaning there are 4000 steps per inch. There will be several different ways to set it in the new FabMo system. Ted Hall, ShopBot Toolsby Ted Hall, ShopBot - Handibot App Developers Forum
Hi Gil, Thanks for checking in. We expect to be testing beta versions of the new Control Cards starting in a few weeks. If all goes well and not too many iterations are required, I expect we will be shipping the final versions of this FabMo Platform later in the Fall. That will probably coincide with our beginning to ship a new release version of the physical Handibot in which FabMo willby Ted Hall, ShopBot - Handibot App Developers Forum
The original "Owner Demonstration Request" thread in now "sticky" at the top. Hopefully that will work as a reasonable repository for those interested in seeing a Handibot. For ShopBot, we have a list of "Demo Sites" ... owners who are willing to demo their tools to interested people. Hi Mitch, Thanks for those questions ... #2 - We've just opened up another Forum area here (just go up one level) for Handibot App Developers. We may end up doing something different in the long run. Our plan is to use this Forum for discussion of all topics related to App development for Handibots. At some point, we may decide on another system, but we thought we would start here. As we move deeper in the process, there will probably be specific issues related to examples or code that are more appropriately handled on the Github site, but for the moment. Boat Numbers! Any of you who are boaters will know that states require the display of one's registration numbers on both port and starboard sides of the bow of one's boat. These are almost always really messy and ugly because people are forced to use hardware-store decals to accomplish the lettering. They tend to never get aligned correctly. On that splitter thing ... It turns out things are getting more complex. I believe that most of those splitters designed for OTG were intended to do the job ... but I just got a new Acer W4 (I had liked the W3 in the past because of the separate charge port) to discover that not only did it not have the charge port, but that it did not work correctly with the splitter. Hey Eric, Just to clarify on the moving around issue (with maybe more detail than needed) ... We believe that the motor drivers in a Handibot should stand up to the backdrive currents that are generated by pushing the axes around. The way we expect Handibots to be handled and moved around, back-driving is going to happen. We've totally abused dozens of them ourselves by now, and I'mby Ted Hall, ShopBot - Handibot Forum

To 648 Just a quick additional comment. You can define the extra axis (channel 5) to work exactly like the Y in the software. I don't think there would be any issues with that. (With a little soldering, you could also hardwire it to the number 2 channel ... which would make it identical ... but not really necessary.)
